Viewed by the Jewish community as “a letter written to us by our parent”, the Tanach/Bible is a “people-making instrument” that gives us a roadmap of faith and national identity. But it is full of mystery as well. How accurate are the accounts of Joseph and his amazing Technicolor dream coat? Who were the Philistines, and when did they arrive in the Biblical Near East? Did the famed walls of Jericho really come crashing down with the onslaught of Joshua’s priestly trumpeters? The literary and archaeological record of the ancient Near East helps explain some of the enigmas that have confronted scholars for millennia with these three episodes in mind.
