Campaign: Light Up America Yellow: International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27
Dear friends,
It is my honor to announce that on International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, Minnesota will visibly commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Yellow lights will illuminate the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis as a visible tribute to victims of the Holocaust, reaffirming our shared commitment to combating antisemitism, hate, and historical denial.
As a member of Mount Zion Temple, with the blessing of Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker, I went on a mission to light up buildings in Minneapolis and St. Paul on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. I came across the Light Up America Yellow Coalition, prompting me to follow their lead and submit an application to the State of Minnesota to light the I-35W bridge. After three years, I’m pleased that Minnesota is now one of 20 states to join the Light Up America Yellow Coalition in lighting our landmarks.
Susie Greenberg, Director of Holocaust Education and Programming at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakots (JCRC) joins Rabbi Spilker and me in alerting the Jewish community to the lighting. She shared these words:
“Minnesota is proud to participate in Lighting Up America Yellow on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. It is a visual reminder that allows us to pay our respects to the victims and honor the survivors of the Shoah, reminding us of the consequences of unchecked hate. It’s an opportunity to designate time to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust and the associated lessons are present.”
Please help us spread the word about the lighting of the I-35W bridge on Tuesday, January 27th. We invite you to share this information with your colleagues, and post, distribute, and share the news with the Jewish community.
We invite you to cut and paste the following announcement or share the news in your own words.
Sincerely,
Daniel Sogin
Minnesota Commemorates the Holocaust
On Tuesday, January 27, Minnesota will visibly commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Yellow lights will illuminate the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis as a visible tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, reaffirming our shared commitment to combating antisemitism, hate, and historical denial.
What began as a labor of love by a member of Mount Zion Temple in St. Paul has resulted in Minnesota becoming one of 20 states to join the Light Up America Yellow Coalition in lighting our landmarks.
The mission to light up Minnesota yellow will continue with the goal of lighting additional Minnesota landmarks, office buildings, and the Minnesota State Capitol.
