February shabbat afternoon movie

Sun February 10, 2019 at 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

The Chosen
Historical movie – 1940s Drama – around opinions on the State of Israel (rating PG—1 hour 50 minutes)

The Chosen is a 1981 drama film directed by Jeremy Kagan, based on the bestselling book of the same name by Chaim Potok published in 1967. It stars Maximilian Schell and Rod Steiger. It won three awards at the 1981 Montréal World Film Festival. It was distributed by Analysis Film Releasing Corp. and 20th Century Fox.

A close friendship is challenged when two teenagers discovers and admires the others differences. Reuven is experienced, practical and worldly-wise; while Danny is brilliant and mystical, incredibly erudite in some matters, but incredibly naïve in others. Their challenges appear as they discover Danny’s ulta Orthodoxy and Reuven’s modern Orthodox Judaism? Danny’s people oppose the State of Israel as fanatically as Reuven and his father are working to create it.

A well-directed version of Chaim Potok’s classic novel about the friendship between two Jewish boys in Brooklyn, one Hasidic and the other not.
Culturally accurate. – Rabbi Yonassan Gershom
