Reparations: Understanding the St. Paul Recovery Act and Reparations Resolution

Fri January 14, 2022 at 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Food for Thought: Friday, January 14, 5:00-6:00 pm Before Shabbat Services
via Zoom

Mount Zion’s Tzedek Committee is excited to invite you to a special Food for Thought on January 14. The Tzedek Committee has made racial justice a priority for 2022. This includes work on reparations for descendants of slavery. In 2021, St. Paul adopted the St. Paul Recovery Act and Reparations resolution and appointed a Legislative Advisory Commission to work on recommendations for reparations in St. Paul. We will discuss what is included in the St. Paul Act, why it is important, and how it relates to past efforts on reparations, including reparations for survivors of the Holocaust.

Speakers:

  • Vic Rosenthal, moderator and member of St. Paul Legislative Advisory Commission, co-chair of the Tzedek Committee.
  • Trahern Crews, co-convenor of the St. Paul Legislative Advisory Commission and leader of Black Lives Matter. Trahern has been working on reparations for many years and organized a grassroots steering committee on reparations.
  • Nick Muhammad, founder of Black Civic Network and long-time community organizer who has been working on reparations at the state level in Minnesota for many years and has written the first state reparations bill.
  • Lori Schuldiner Schor has worked at the Claims Conference for 12 years. The Claims Conference was founded in 1951 and remains the chief restitution agency representing world Jewry in on-going German government negotiations for reparations on behalf of Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. Lori lives in New Jersey where she has been a city planner and lawyer.
