Shabbat for the Soul: Featuring a Speaker in Recognition of JDAIM

Fri February 23, 2024 at 6:30 pm

February is Jewish Disability, Awareness, Acceptance and Inclusion (JDAIM) Month. Mount Zion member, Shelley Robbins, will be our pulpit speaker on Friday, February 23 during our Shabbat evening service.

What happened to you?
Losing our abilities as adults and finding new ways to adapt and thrive.

Mount Zion member Shelley Robbins will discuss ways in which our experiences of aging and health challenges can impact us as participants in synagogue life. Shelley has been chanting Torah at Mount Zion since 2007 and also served as a music shaliach tzibur (prayer leader) for Shabbat and Daily Services. As someone who has experienced the loss of a number of abilities as a result of health issues, she can no longer easily chant Torah , read from a scroll, memorize, and lead music .

Shelley will discuss the impact, feelings, and challenges associated with no longer being able to do a number of things she used to do easily, and ways in which those of us who experience these challenges can adjust and even thrive as we show up differently in our lives and community roles.

Shelley and her family have been Mount Zion members since 2006.

Welcome Kate!
We will formally welcome Kate Tucker as our Executive Director on Friday, February 23. Join us for Shabbat Services and a special oneg in Kate’s honor.

Shabbat for the Soul Services.

October 27, Nov. 17,  Dec. 8, January 12, Feb. 23, March 15, April 19, May 17

Live from Margolis Hall (also on Zoom and live-streaming)

We move from the formality of the sanctuary to our social hall to create a more intimate service. Our singing is accompanied by violin, guitar, keyboard, and percussion. The evocative music opens our hearts and awakens our spirits.

Shabbat is always for the soul, but there is a particularly soulful atmosphere at “Shabbat for the Soul” services. It is a more contemplative worship style with the congregation sitting in the round. We use a single page handout for the prayers. A slower pace enables us to focus on the meditative effect of the music, the potential for deeper awareness and prayer, and the feeling of community.
