Yom HaShoah in an Increasingly Hateful World

Fri April 9, 2021 at 6:00 pm

A Talk During Shabbat Services – 6 pm
Dr. Alejandro Baer

Can we compare today to Nazi Germany?
Drawing parallelisms and analogies with the history of Nazism and the Holocaust have become common in scholarship, journalism, and politics. Moreover, Holocaust education hinges on applying the lessons of the past to the present. But where do we draw a line of appropriate comparison? Can it be done?

Dr. Baer is the Stephen C. Feinstein Chair and Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) at the University of Minnesota and Associate Professor, Department of Sociology. Previously he taught in universities in Madrid, Bayreuth, Berlin, and Munich. Baer has authored numerous books and articles addressing issues of genocide, survivor testimony, collective memory, and antisemitism, with particular focus on Germany, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking world. He and his wife Paula and daughter Elisa are members of Mount Zion.
