I am pleased to announce and invite you to a special event for our Classical Music Lovers Small Group: “So You Think You Know Bach?” on Saturday, October 5, 4:00-5:30 pm, at Mount Zion Temple (room TBA). The event will combine music examples (live and recorded), learning session, and discussion opportunity, all prompted by a focus on the Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The event will be led by our own David Knapp, who is an avid chamber musician and active amateur violinist. David will play the Adagio movement from Bach’s G minor Violin Sonata, and the Gigue from Bach’s E major Violin Partita. Each piece will be augmented with musical examples of other performers’ interpretations from the same works and other Baroque composers’ handling of the same musical form. We really want this to be interactive, with David facilitating group discussion on Bach, the Baroque, and the significance of the sonatas and partitas in the violin literature and beyond.
Following our musical event, participants will have the opportunity to join a special Havdallah service, led by Shai Avny, at 6 pm, to celebrate the Small Groups Initiative. Other small groups from the program are also scheduling events for that day, and they too will assemble with us at Mount Zion for Havdallah.
I’d appreciate if each of you could please RSVP to me by Sept. 30, indicating whether you’ll be able to attend. This will help me and the administrative staff determine the number of people expected to attend and help us choose the best room at the Temple for our event.
