The Gefilte Manifesto: New Recipes for Old World Jewish Foods

Come reimagine traditional Ashkenazi food with Liz Alpern and Jeffrey Yoskowitz, the Gefilteria Gurus.

5:00-5:30pm Old World-New World Mocktails/Cocktails

5:30-7:30pm Kreplach Make & Eat, followed by Halva-dalah
After learning about and making these chicken or vegetable dumplings, we will enjoy each other’s company as we eat our creations in soup, along with salad, fruit and halva.
*Halva-dalah = halva + Havdalah


Sunday, December 4

Rugelach* in the Religious School! For pre-K-2nd grade.
Our youngest students, pre-K-2nd grade, will spend time with the clergy learning about how and why we say blessings over food. Then they will get hands-on experience making, then in-mouths experience eating, these tasty traditional confections.

12:15-1:45 Adult Lunch & Learn: “The Shtetl Kitchen”
Cost: $10 members / $18 non-members
Liz and Jeffrey will lead us through an interactive slide lecture on Eastern European Jewish foodways, past and present. We’ll discuss exciting discoveries about seasonal Jewish eating, holiday cooking, and culinary wisdom which will transform everything you thought about Ashkenazi gastronomy. We will learn about goose, gefilte fish, cabbage, kugel, and more, all while munching on sweet noodle kugel, bagels, salad and fruit.

12:15-1:45 Noar Tzion (open to 3rd-6th graders): Make & Eat Bialys* with Abby!
Cost: $7
We’ll learn about bread in Ashkenazi Jewish tradition, then we’ll bake and eat together. Please be sure to indicate on the registration if you are gluten free and/or dairy free so we can accommodate you.
*a baked bagel-like bread with no hole!
