The Talmud teaches (Sanhedrin 21b) that it is a Mitzvah for every Jew to write their own Sefer Torah. Rabbi Andrew Jacobs interprets: “Every day, simply by waking up, we begin a new page in our personal Torah…Torah is not simply the adventures of Abraham and Moses and the Israelites. “Torah” means teaching. We learn from the stories of our ancestors. At the same time, we learn from every day that we are blessed with.”
In this group, we will take inspiration from the weekly Torah portions to add pages to our own Personal Torah by writing down the learnings and teachings of our lives as Jews. They might be in the form of poetry, stories, essays, songs, letters; whatever form emerges from you. Deuteronomy 30:12 says of Torah: “It is not in the heavens. Neither is it beyond the sea…No, it is very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart.” Let’s create living, ongoing Torah together!
We will meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 1 PM in the Sisterhood Lounge.
